The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) has addressed recent reports of citizens being barred from boarding international flights due to their passports carrying a validity period exceeding 10 years.
This issue typically occurs when individuals renew their passports prior to expiration, resulting in the remaining months being rolled over into the new document. For example, a passport renewed with three months remaining is issued with a total validity of 10 years and three months.
Travellers flagged over extended passport validity
A recent Facebook post by travel agent Nurhamizah Zaid highlighted a critical issue where Malaysians were barred from boarding international flights.
According to the post, her clients faced flight boarding and baggage complications while travelling in Zimbabwe. The root cause was their Malaysian International Passports possessing a validity period exceeding the standard 10 years.
This anomaly occurs when individuals renew their passports early, and the Immigration Department (JIM) rolls the remaining months into the new document, resulting in a validity period of 10 years and several months.
JIM clarifies issue lies with airline booking systems
Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban responded to the viral claims, clarifying that neither domestic nor international laws prohibit passports from carrying a validity period of over a decade.
From a border control perspective, these travel documents are fully legitimate. The complications stem entirely from specific airline online booking systems rejecting these extended validity dates.
To assist affected travellers currently facing difficulties abroad, JIM has issued formal notification letters directly to international airlines.
Maximum passport validity now capped strictly at 10 years
To prevent further confusion and standardise international travel procedures, JIM has immediately capped the maximum validity period for the Malaysian International Passport at exactly 10 years.
The issuance of any new passports with validity periods exceeding this absolute limit is suspended with immediate effect.
Free replacements for affected passport holders
Malaysians currently holding a passport with a validity period exceeding 10 years are eligible for a free replacement.
JIM confirmed that the new replacement document will strictly adhere to the 10-year maximum limit.
To minimise travel disruptions, the department is providing priority service at all immigration offices for affected individuals seeking this replacement.
Counter ticket purchases required for immediate travel
For individuals holding extended-validity passports who must travel immediately without time for a replacement, Zakaria strongly advised purchasing flight tickets directly at physical airline service counters.
Buying tickets in person allows airline staff to manually verify the passport’s validity on the spot, bypassing the technical limitations of online booking systems.
He also confirmed that JIM will not issue individual supporting letters to validate passports exceeding the 10-year mark, making direct counter purchases the sole workaround for current holders.
