Uber has expanded beyond KL and they are now running in Johor Bahru, offering safe and clean transportation service. As an introductory offer, they are giving 10 Free rides with a maximum of RM25 per ride for the month of August. There’s no codes needed and you can start ordering for free Uber rides from now until 31st August 2014 (11.59PM).

In terms of rates, they charge a base fare of RM1.50 followed by RM0.60 per KM and RM0.20 per minute. That’s slightly more than KL’s UberX service but it appears that they are using larger sedans like Toyota Camry. Trips to Senai Airport would costs a flat rate of RM50, so it will cost you just RM25 with the free 10 rides promo.

The beauty of Uber is its cashless experience where it is charged automatically to your credit or debit card. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out our initial review of their original UberBlack service.

To get started, just download the app from the links below:
iOS
Android
Windows Phone

Take note that you would need to register your credit or debit card during sign up and there’s a small pre-authorisation fee charged which will be rebated back to your card. Since the service is still new, Uber is covering central JB city and its nearby surroundings. Eventually they would expand to more places as they add more cars into the system.

Uber is seen as a disruptor in the transportation system and most recently a group of taxi drivers are calling the authorities to take action, citing passenger safety. Today, SPAD’s chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar was reported by The Malaysian Insider that they would tread carefully with Uber as the popularity of the Uber application was an indication that the public wanted good taxi services and would not depend on regular taxis if their service was not up to mark. He added that what is clear is that the public demands good service. So our taxi services have to buck up.
