There’s now a cheaper way to watch videos on YouTube without ads. YouTube Premium Lite is officially offered in Malaysia at RM12.90/month, which is about 38% cheaper than the standard Premium plan.

According to YouTube’s official page, the Lite tier provides an ad-free experience for most non-music content, alongside support for offline downloads and background playback.

YouTube is position this new plan as a lower-cost option for users who primarily watch creator videos, podcasts and general content.

YouTube Premium plans in Malaysia

YouTube Malaysia currently offers four subscription tiers locally. Here’s the full list:

  • YouTube Premium Lite – RM12.90/month
  • YouTube Premium – RM20.90/month
  • YouTube Premium Family (supports up to five additional members) – RM41.90/month
  • YouTube Premium Student (verification required) – RM12.90/month

You can subscribe to Premium online via the web browser or through the YouTube app.

What’s the difference between Premium and Premium Lite?

For 38% cheaper in price, the main difference between Premium and Premium Lite is the coverage of videos especially for video content.

Based on YouTube’s official support documentation, Premium Lite benefits apply only to most non-music videos. This means users can watch standard videos such as podcasts and creator uploads ad-free, with background play and downloads supported.

However, these features do not extend to music-focused content, including official music videos, covers and dance videos. Ads may still appear in these categories, and background playback or downloads may not be available.

In comparison, the full YouTube Premium plan removes ads across all content, including music videos. In addition, the full Premium plan also unlocks full functionality on YouTube Music which also provides ad-free playback, offline downloads and background listening.

To summarise, YouTube Premium Lite essentially provides a more affordable ad-free option if you’re mainly watching non-music content. However, if you rely on YouTube for music or want a fully uninterrupted experience across the platform, you might want to consider getting the full Premium plan for the complete experience.
