Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has started issuing summonses for vehicles found hogging designated EV charging bays.
This follows repeated complaints about vehicles occupying street-level chargers deployed by charge point operators such as JomCharge, in collaboration with DBKL.
These street-level EV chargers are meant to expand charging access and support the growing adoption of EVs in Malaysia. However, a lack of civic mindfulness has caused significant inconvenience. It’s about time authorities step in to enforce proper usage and encourage better behaviour.
As shared recently, a petrol-powered vehicle was spotted hogging a designated EV charging bay located at McDonald’s Sri Petaling and it has received a compound notice.
It seems that DBKL is now taking enforcement action as these are legally recognised “petak khas” (special-use parking). Based on a notice sighted, the offence falls under Perintah Pengangkutan Jalan (Peruntukan Tempat Letak Kereta) (WPKL) 2016, specifically Perintah 15(1), which prohibits parking in reserved spaces without proper use.
In this case, the violation was clearly stated as placing a vehicle in a petak khas kenderaan EV.
The compound amount is RM30 if settled within 7 days and it will rise to RM50 if settled between 8th and 15th day. Subsequently, it will go up to RM80 if settled between 16th and 30th day.
After 30 days, the compound will be RM100 with the possibility of court action if left unpaid.
With enforcement now in place, this should serve as a reminder that EV charging bays are not parking spots regardless if you’re driving an EV or an internal combustion engine vehicle.
Charging bays are meant for vehicles that need to charge and if you’re done charging, you should free up the bay as soon as possible. As clarified by JomCharge, customers charging their vehicles at these JomCharge x DBKL street-level chargers are not required to pay for parking fees.
As more EV chargers are deployed across the city, proper usage becomes critical to ensure fair access for everyone.
Remember, if you’re not charging, you’re hogging.
