The Tesla Model Y L electric SUV will be launched in Malaysia on 1 April at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. First launched in China last August, the variant is set to become the 4th Model Y option in Malaysia after the base Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), Long Range (LR) RWD, and LR All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
This is not the first time that Tesla has offered models with a 3-row configuration. Prior to this, Model X and the previous generation Model Y could be obtained with this option, but neither of them was officially released in Malaysia.
Tesla Model Y L Malaysia pricing is still a secret

At the moment, the pricing for Model Y L in Malaysia is still under wraps. That being said, we do know that the Model Y L is going to cost more than the Model Y LR AWD based on information from other markets that have already received the variant, such as China and Australia.
This means that Model Y L is going to cost more than RM242,450, which is the current starting price of Model Y LR AWD in Malaysia. This doesn’t come as a surprise, as the Model Y L is essentially a Model Y LR AWD with a longer wheelbase.
Tesla Model Y L vs other Model Y variants – what are the differences?

To deliver the 3-row configurations on the new variant, Tesla has made the Model Y L longer and taller than the standard Model Y. Here’s how their physical measurements look side by side:
Tesla Model Y L
Dimensions: 4,976mm x 2,129mm x 1,668mm
Wheelbase: 3,040mm
Bootspace: 420L – 2,539L
Kerb Weight: 2,088kg
Tesla Model Y
Dimensions: 4,797mm x 2,129mm x 1,624mm
Wheelbase: 2,890mm
Bootspace: 822L – 2,138L
Kerb Weight: 1,891kg – 1,992kg

The Model Y L comes with 2nd row captain seats, which have ventilation and heaters just like the front seats. They also feature motorised armrests alongside adjustable headrests, while users can electronically adjust the position of the seats and their recline angles.
On the Model Y L, you can access the 3rd row seats by walking on the aisle between the 2nd row captain seats, instead of sliding them forward. When you open the door, the armrests on the captain seats will lower down automatically to provide more space to access the 3rd row seats.

The 3rd row seats have a heater function but are not ventilated, which is an odd setup for a hot country like Malaysia. The recline angles on these seats can be adjusted electronically, while they also have their own cup holders, USB-C ports, and air conditioning vents similar to the 2nd row seats.
The 3-row 6-seater configuration and extended dimensions were not the only features that set the Model Y L apart from other Model Y variants in Malaysia. There are also other features such as:
- Electronically-adjustable thigh support extension on the front seats
- 18-speaker audio system with a subwoofer
- Heat-repellent silver coatings on the rear windscreen, extended from the roof
- Black spoiler
- Adaptive suspension system with electronic damping
- Magnetic latches and support legs for rear cargo cover
- Powershare feature provides Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability (requires Tesla Outlet Adapter, not yet available in Malaysia)

Meanwhile, the Model Y L comes only with 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels. The unit previewed to us by Tesla Malaysia was equipped with Continental EcoContact 7 S tyres with staggered width – 255/45 front and 275/45 rear.
Tesla Model Y L Malaysia performance, range, battery, charging, colourways

As per usual, Tesla did not officially reveal the battery capacity for Model Y L as well as its motor output.
However, the regulatory filing in China that was revealed last July, as well as the Model Y owner’s manual for China, said that the Model Y L has a total motor power output of 340kW (456hp) and 567Nm total max torque from its AWD setup. The same regulatory filing also listed Model Y L’s battery as an 82kWh NMC that was sourced from LG.

When it comes to official figures, Tesla said that the Model Y L has a WLTP-rated range of 681km. The 3-row 6-seater electric SUV also has a top speed of 201km/h and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5 seconds, which is just 0.2 seconds slower than the Model Y LR AWD variant.
In terms of charging, the Model Y L supports DC charging speed of up to 250kW, which allows it to obtain up to 288km of range in 15 minutes when plugged to a Tesla Supercharger. The electric SUV also supports an AC charging speed of up to 11kW.

Stealth Grey remained the default exterior colour for Model Y L in Malaysia, similar to the standard Model Y. For a fee, you can choose to have it in Pearl White, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Ultra Red, and Cosmic Silver.
The Model Y L continues to feature a 16-inch centre infotainment touch screen on the front and an 8-inch 2nd row touchscreen. Similarly, the Model Y L has a Black interior as default, but customers can choose to switch it to Zen Grey (shown here) colourway for a fee.
