More than a year after it was first previewed at the KL International Mobility Show 2024, the GWM Wey G9 PHEV was finally released in Malaysia late last month. The new premium MPV received a rather positive reaction from the market, with over 800 bookings recorded within a week after its Malaysian launch event.
The Wey G9 PHEV is currently available with an on-the-road (OTR) price tag of RM269,800, not inclusive of insurance. Check out our first look at the new plug-in hybrid MPV right here:
The Wey G9 PHEV was the 2nd GWM vehicle to be locally assembled (CKD) at EP Manufacturing Berhad’s (EPMB) plant in Melaka. What made things even more interesting, Malaysian CKD units have also been exported to Thailand, with additional ASEAN markets already in planning.

Being a 5,050mm long, 1,985mm wide, and 1,900mm tall MPV, the Wey G9 is longer and wider than the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. Dimensions aside, GWM said that the new PHEV can provide 233L of luggage space when the rear seats are up, but can be expanded up to 1725L.
The MPV also features MacPherson strut suspension on the front, together with multi-link suspension on the rear. While the Wey G9 does not come with air suspension, several technologies, such as Intelligent Torque Vectoring Control (iTVC), Frequency Response Damper (FRD), and Hydraulic Rebound Stop (HRS) helped provide stability and comfort to the MPV.

Also featuring all-wheel drive configuration, the heart of the Wey G9 is the GWM Hi4 technology, which consists of a front-mounted 148hp (110kW) 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 240Nm of torque, paired with a 107hp (80kW) electric motor that also produces 170Nm of torque. Completing the hybrid powertrain is a rear-mounted 181hp (135kW) electric motor with 232Nm of torque.
Together, they can deliver a maximum power output of 436hp (325kW) with a maximum torque of 642Nm. GWM claimed that the Wey G9 can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds and also has a top speed of 190km/h.

The Wey G9 relies on a 44.2kWh NMC ternary lithium battery pack and a 58L fuel tank to move. The MPV comes standard with 6.6kW AC charging capability and supports DC charging speed of up to 60kW, while it is also capable of powering up external electrical appliances through its 3.3kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature.
Range-wise, the Wey G9 offers an NEDC-rated pure electric range of 170km, which is approximately 145km in WLTP. GWM claimed that the MPV can deliver a combined range of up to 1,000km in NEDC or approximately 850km WLTP.
