Claimed to be one of the most significant evolutions in the Lego universe since the debut of the Minifigure 47 years ago, Lego has unveiled the new Lego Smart Play at CES 2026. The new platform promises to inject new levels of interactivity into Lego System-in-Play like never before.

Lego Smart Play: how does it work?

There are three main elements within the Lego Smart Play system, including the Smart Brick. It is the centrepiece of the Lego Smart Play system, as it is the one that would breathe life into the Lego set or pieces.

Contained within the 2×4 brick is a custom chip, lights, a colour-recognition scanner, a sound synthesiser, and an accelerometer. The Smart Brick would then react when placed near a Smart Tag or a Smart Minifigure – the reaction depends on the content that the Smart Tag or Smart Minifigure dictates.

Let’s say you decide to build an aeroplane using Lego bricks. Put an aeroplane-themed Smart Tag on your creation alongside a Smart Brick, and you could then hear aeroplane-related sounds as well as lights coming out from the Smart Brick.

Since the Smart Brick has an accelerometer, it would also react to the movement of your plane as you “fly” it around. You can amp up the interaction by adding a Smart Minifigure pilot into the mix, which would then unleash its personality via the Smart Brick.

Lego pointed out that this is just the start of Smart Play as it will be expanded further not only through new sets but also “new updates, launches and technology”.

Lego Smart Play to debut through new Star Wars sets

Julia Goldin, Chief Product & Marketing Officer of Lego Group revealed the new Lego Star Wars Smart Play sets at CES 2026.

The new Lego Smart Play system will be released into the market this coming March, but not as a set of its own. Instead, it will be part of three new Lego Start Wars sets.

Each set will come with at least one Smart Brick and a charger, as well as one Smart Minifigure and Smart Tag. Yes, that’s right – some set comes with more than one unit for these items.

For example, the Throne Room Duel & A-wing set has Luke Skywalker, Emperor Palpatine, and Darth Vader Minifigures alongside 2 Smart Bricks. In addition to that, it also has 5 Smart Tags that cover the A-wing Fighter, throne, cannon turret, and 2 Lightsabers.

At this moment, Lego has yet to confirm whether these Lego Star Wars Smart Play sets will make their way into Malaysia. We will keep you updated once we hear more from Lego but be prepared as these Star Wars Smart Play sets are priced between USD69.99 (~RM285) to USD159.99 (~RM650).
