The Volvo EX90 is Volvo Car Malaysia’s flagship 7-seater electric SUV that aims to set the benchmark in safety, technology and sustainability. But while this EV is built as a premium family cruiser, it also also packs some serious performance, capable of propelling this huge EV from 0 to 100km/h in under 5 seconds.

Can it deliver the claimed performance in the real world? We find out by putting the EX90 Ultra Twin Motor EV to the test.

EX90: The quickest 7-seater Volvo SUV

The EX90 is Volvo’s most powerful production to date (before the ES90 launches), featuring dual motors with 380kW (509hp) and a massive 910Nm of torque.

Officially, this three-row 7-seater EV can do 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds. That’s quicker than the XC90 Recharge T8 PHEV that has a claimed 0-100 time of 5.3 seconds.

For our 0-100 test, we did a total of three runs with Performance All-Wheel Drive mode turned on, and both Steering and Suspension Feel set to Firm. And here are the results:

  • Run 1 (One Pedal Drive: Enabled) : 4.93s
  • Run 2 (One Pedal Drive: Enabled): 4.86s
  • Run 3 (One Pedal Drive: Disabled): 4.91s

On average, the EX90 Ultra Twin did a 0-100 time of 4.9 seconds which is exactly what Volvo has claimed.

However, this isn’t the fastest Volvo yet. That title still goes to the compact Volvo EX30 Ultra Twin Performance which rockets from 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds. That’s quicker than the Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered which does 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds.

As you would expect from a Volvo, the top speed is limited to just 180km/h.

Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin Price and Specs in Malaysia

To recap, the Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin is officially priced at RM442,888 in Malaysia and this is the only variant available locally with 7-seats (2-3-2). This EV is equipped with a 111kWh (107kWh usable) with a claimed WLTP-rated range of up to 623km on a single charge.

It supports three-phase AC charging up to 11kW and DC charging of up to 250kW. 10-80% charge on DC takes approximately 30 minutes.

In case you missed it, we took the Volvo EX90 on a long-distance road trip from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, Penang to Kota Bharu (via Gerik) and Kota Bharu back to Kuala Lumpur (via Gua Musang), during the Hari Raya Haji weekend. In terms of energy efficiency, we did an average of 21 to 23 kWh per 100km during our road trip.
