U Mobile has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Melaka ICT Holdings Sdn Bhd (MICTH) with the aim to accelerate its 5G network deployment in Melaka. The telco says the move supports its ambition to reach 80% coverage of populated areas (CoPA) nationwide by the second half of 2026.

As part of the partnership, MICTH will provide access to its tower and site infrastructure across the state. Both U Mobile and MICTH will also collaborate to streamline site implementation processes, enabling faster rollout of 5G coverage for both consumers and enterprises in Melaka.

U Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer Woon Ooi Yuen said, “We are pleased to have the full support of MICTH as part of our growing list of collaborators who are key to the rollout of our Next Gen 5G network. As Melaka’s state-backed ICT leader, MICTH plays a vital role in accelerating deployment in the state, supporting our ambition to achieve 80% nationwide CoPA by H2 2026. Through this MoU, 5G connectivity in Melaka will be enhanced for both consumers and enterprises alike. U Mobile’s Next Gen 5G network will also help advance Melaka’s digital transformation agenda and drive the growth of its digital economy.”

Dr. Nazdiana Ab. Wahab, CEO of MICTH, added, “MICTH values its strategic partnership with U Mobile in accelerating the deployment of 5G in Melaka. MICTH remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring seamless and inclusive connectivity across the state, supporting Melaka’s digital transformation and infrastructure development for the benefit of  the economy and the people of Melaka.”

The MoU exchange ceremony took place during the Melaka State Telecommunication Synergy event held at Kuala Lumpur. The signing was witnessed by Melaka Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf bin Yusoh, and Melaka State Secretary, YB Dato’ Azhar bin Haji Arshad.

According to the Chief Minister, Melaka currently has achieved 99.97% 4G population coverage and 89.7% 5G population coverage, with average speeds exceeding 121Mbps. He added that the state aims for 100% 4G and 5G coverage in all populated areas by 2027.
