Alright, so in case you missed it, Intel previously showed off their Meteor Lake lineup of mobile processors with a new naming scheme that goes something like ‘Intel Core Ultra 7’. However, there’s also their 14th Gen Intel Core desktop processors that aren’t going with the new naming scheme as they were mostly refreshed 13th Gen processors. At CES 2024 then, Intel has released a bunch of new processors that belong to the latter, with new 14th Gen Intel Core processors for both desktop and high-performance gaming laptops.
New 14th Gen Intel Core Desktop Processors
Starting off with the desktop side then, building on top of the overclockable, enthusiast K-series chips that debuted last October, Intel is now releasing a slew of new models in the 14th Gen Intel Core lineup, giving mainstream PC users more options when configuring and building their new computer. There will be 18 new desktop processors here in total ranging from the top tier Intel Core i9-14900 to the more basic Intel Core i3-14100. They boast up to 5.8GHz boost speeds with Intel claiming up to 37% faster multi-threaded performance compared to the last generation, with the Intel Core i9-14900 in particular packing 24 cores and 32 threads, while the Core i7-14700 gets four extra E-cores compared to its predecessor.
The 14th Gen Intel Core series also comes with support for up to 192GB of total memory, with support for both DDR5 and DDR4 for backward compatibility with existing Intel 600 and 700 series motherboards. You’ll also find their redesigned stock coolers in the box, along with continued support for up to WiFi 7 wireless connectivity, PCIe Gen 5.0/4.0, and Thunderbolt 4. The mainstream processors will come with Intel UHD graphics and an up to 65W base TDP, while the F-series chips loses the iGPU for a lower recommended price. There are also the T-series processors which do have integrated graphics but at a lower 35W base TDP.
14th Gen Intel Core HX-series processors for mobile
Not to be confused with the Intel Core Ultra 14th Gen processors based on Intel’s new Meteor Lake architecture, the 14th Gen Intel Core HX-series of high end mobile processors are more like their desktop counterparts in that they’re refreshes of the Raptor Lake-HX architecture in 13th Gen intel Core HX processors.
While they might not carry the new Intel Core Ultra naming scheme, these 14th Gen Intel Core HX-series mobile processors are still incredibly powerful, targeting gamers, creators and professionals who require portability and performance in a single machine. The top dog here is the Intel Core i9-14900HX which has eight P-cores and 16 E-cores, with boosts of up to 5.8GHz that Intel says will offer up to 17% better gaming performance and up to 51% faster multitasking compared to the competition. Then there’s also the Intel Core i7-14700HX, which has eight P-cores and 12 E-cores, six more E-cores than its direct predecessor.
Other cool features here include support for up to 182GB of DDR5 memory, Thunderbolt 5 support, integrated WiFI 6E and optional WiFI 7 wireless connectivity on top of support for up to Bluetooth 5.4 and of course, unlocked overclocking for if you need your laptop to go even faster. According to Intel, you can expect to see over 60 different 14th Gen Intel Core HX-series processors appear later this year from their various OEM partners.
