The CES pre-announcements are coming in droves, and MSI may be one of the more interesting from the bunch. The handheld gaming PC is booming with major players like Asus and Lenovo, as well as minor players making portable machines for the market. Now another brand is looking to join in the fun.
MSI has just posted a teaser on its Instagram account, teasing an announcement that will be made at the upcoming CES 2024. The post claims that “a whole new breed of MSI is coming” and shows two off-set joysticks with RGB lights surrounding it.
We don’t have any confirmation on what the inside of the MSI machine will be featuring, but a tweet reply by Intel Gaming may hint that MSI is choosing Intel as the CPU to power the upcoming portable.
The new Meteor Lake CPU from Intel features Arc GPU cores, which could be a new contender to the AMD SoCs in the portable gaming PC market space. On the other hand, we are seeing reports that Meteor Lake is not as power efficient at lower power limits, so it could be a deal breaker as most portable gaming PCs tend to operate at lower power.
Currently, the market has the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion GO as well as other manufacturers like AYANEO running the AMD Z1 Extreme, which is similar to AMD’s Ryzen 7 7840U. The Valve Steamdeck meanwhile runs a customized Van Gogh APU which has older Zen 2 cores but with RDNA 2 GPU cores.
There are no official date from MSI yet on when the announcement will be, but we will definitely be looking out to see how MSI will differentiate itself from its competitors in this space.
