OnePlus Open: Is this what OnePlus is calling its foldable?

Just last month, leaks of the upcoming foldable device from OnePlus began surfacing online. Indeed, everyone, including us, called it the OnePlus Fold because that seemed to be the name that made the most sense; it was simple, made it clear what it was and followed the industry in naming convention. Well it seems that someone forgot to tell OnePlus themselves about it, because it appears that it won’t be called the OnePlus Fold.

Instead, according to serial OnePlus leakster Max Jambor, the upcoming foldable would be called the OnePlus Open. No seriously, OnePlus had even apparently patented the name OnePlus Open a short while ago too. In the European Union Intellectual Property website, it showed that they had received an application for the name OnePlus Open as early as April, with the name currently waiting for any opposition proceedings before it can be awarded to OnePlus.

There’s a chance that they won’t go through with OnePlus Open when the foldable does finally arrive later this year though. Jambor did indicate that OnePlus had also registered the trademarks for the names OnePlus Prime, OnePlus Wing, OnePlus Peak and OnePlus Edge, though he believes that OnePlus Open is currently in the lead. I mean, OnePlus Open does kinda make sense, seeing that it is supposed to be a Galaxy Z Fold-esque foldable that can be opened up to show off the large main display.

It’s likely that we will be seeing the OnePlus Fold—sorry I meant, OnePlus Open—in the coming few months; according to the EU IP website, the opposition period for the OnePlus Open name will end in August. While we will have to wait for the full launch to know more about it, speculation is that it will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 under the hood with a main 7.8-inch OLED display with a secondary 6.3-inch outer display, with a 4,800mAh battery keeping the lights on.
