The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a notice denying a purported email that was allegedly sent by its Chairman. According to the statement, the MCMC Chairman did not send an email to the public about an offer to transfer cash prizes worth as much as RM270,000 from Telekom Malaysia to a personal bank account.
The MCMC reminded the public to stay alert and not to be fooled by emails sent from unknown sources. The commission reminded users not to provide their personal details such as online banking credentials and personal identification details to unknown parties.
Anyone who has made any transactions for the so-called processing fee to receive the cash prize money is urged to call the National Scam Response Centre hotline at 997 immediately.
Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching recently revealed that the MCMC has instructed all telcos to block URLs in SMS. This is to prevent potential phishing scams where victims may click on the links and provide their personal details on a fake website. The directive to block links in SMS will be implemented in phases.
