Android smartphones may not enjoy long software support as much as the iPhone but OnePlus is still committed to delivering up to 4 major operating system updates for its flagship phones. The OnePlus 7 which was launched in 2019 with OxygenOS 9.5 based on Android 9.0 has just gotten its final update to OxygenOS 12 which runs on Android 12. That’s a total of 3 major OS updates since it was first released over three years ago.
The OxygenOS 12 update was initially rolled out in October last year but it was stopped due to a network issue. After repacking it with December 2022 security patch, OnePlus now is pushing the newer OxygenOS 12 MP3 update and they have confirmed that this will be the final update for their 2019 flagships. According to the changelog, the update improves system stability and performance as well as the stability of mobile network connections.
The latest OxygenOS 12 update with Android 12 is also rolling out for the OnePlus 7T and the 7T Pro which was launched with Android 10. OnePlus said that the OTA update is reaching out to a small percentage of users today and it will be rolled out to everyone in the coming days. The previous major OS update for the OnePlus 7 and 7T series was OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11 which was pushed in March 2021.
As announced last month, OnePlus is now putting more focus on its software by offering at least four major OS upgrades and five years of security patches for select devices launched starting in 2023. As a comparison, the current OnePlus 10T and 10 Pro are promised to come with three major Android OS upgrades and four years of security patches. With this new commitment, the latest OnePlus 11 which was recently launched with Android 13 should be able to get constant updates up to Android 17.
