With the rise in scam cases lately, it’s important to take extra precautions to protect yourself from falling victim. In today’s LTA clip video, Amin and Alex share their top tips to keep in mind.

For those who aren’t able to watch the video. Here’s a quick text summary.

Tip #1: Be careful of suspicious links that you get via SMS

Even if an SMS appears to come from your bank or somewhere legitimate, always be careful when clicking on links. To be safe, give your bank a call and verify with them whether the text is legitimate. Additionally, when visiting links or websites make sure there is a lock icon in the URL bar because that indicates that a website is secure. Do not perform any transactions or key in sensitive information at that website.

Tip #2: Install a password manager or create a secure password

You might be surprised how many people use passwords that are incredibly common or easy to brute force. A handy way to make sure your passwords are different across accounts without needing you to remember a whole bunch of complicated codes is to use a password manager. Amin and Alex both use password managers so they only need to remember one password to access all their accounts.

Tip #3: Install a VPN

A shocking number of people do not think twice about logging onto a free and open WiFi network. That is an incredibly easy for malicious parties to steal information from you through a public or open WiFi network. This includes any information that is not encrypted and it is a huge security risk. One way to protect your data is by installing a VPN (Virtual Private Network). VPNs masks your connection and protects you from thieving eyes. That being said, you should also be careful about using these services from unverified providers.
