Spotify users on iPhone report overheating and battery drain after updating to iOS 15

There has been several complaints by iPhone users using iOS 15 and iOS 14.8 concerning battery drainage and overheating when using the Spotify app. Spotify has also acknowledged the reports, saying that they are currently looking into the problem.

“Thanks for your reports about battery drainage while updating from iOS 14.8 to 15 on both firmware versions during the past days. We’ve passed your info on to the relevant team and we can confirm they are currently looking into it,” wrote Spotify.

In the same community page, Spotify users have complained of their iPhones being “extremely hot” when they start listening to music on Spotify. Some also report that the app works very slowly, “crashes in every song”, and “consumes a lot of battery” when the app is used.

In response to the many complaints by users, Spotify recommends that you should “try restarting” and/or do a clean reinstall of the app. Here’s how to do it on the iPhone, but you can also learn how to reinstall Spotify on other devices here.

  • Open Spotify. In the app’s settings (you can access them by going to Home and then tapping the gear icon in the top right corner), tap Storage then Delete Cache.
  • Head to your device’s Settings, then tap General.
  • Tap iPhone Storage.
  • Select Spotify from the list of apps.
  • Tap Offload the app and confirm. This will delete the app but its documents data will be kept.
  • Then tap Delete App and confirm. This action should delete any leftover documents and data.
  • Once the app is deleted, press and hold the Side/Top button and either volume button until the power off slider appears.
  • Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
  • After your device turns off, wait a couple of minutes.
  • Press and hold the Top (or Side) button again until the display turns on.
  • Switch your device back on and install Spotify from the App Store.

Besides that, they recommend that you should disable Background App Refresh by going to Settings, and then to General. Background App Refresh allows Spotify to update their content from the internet, even while you’re not using them. Disabling the feature would likely help lessen the battery drainage—until Spotify fixes the problem, I guess.

Previously, the iOS 15 update also reportedly caused an audio problem with Instagram. However, Instagram found and fixed the issues very quickly.
