Instagram has always been a mobile-centric platform. Sure, you can access your account from the desktop site, and there is even a Windows app on the Microsoft store. However, the ability to upload posts—be it images, videos, or whatever—has always been reserved for its mobile apps. Heck, the Facebook-owned platform doesn’t even have a viable iPad app, which has annoyed tablet users (like this writer) for years.
Regardless, it now appears that the Insta-team (yes, I just coined that) is now listening, and the ability to upload directly from a desktop computer or laptop might finally be in the works. The information comes courtesy of Alessandro Paluzzi, an Italian self-proclaimed leaker who purportedly revealed that Instagram is testing out the feature now.
According to Paluzzi, the feature won’t be a part of a desktop app or anything like that. Instead, you’ll be able to upload posts directly from the web browser version of Instagram. It looks fairly similar to the way posts are uploaded onto the Instagram app to begin with—press the “+” icon, drag a media file onto the dedicated area, do some light editing and insert a caption, tag(s), etc.
I don’t suppose many of you will be using the in-app editor if you were to upload via desktop, however. The way I see it, one of the major benefits of uploading files directly from desktop (or laptop, if you prefer) is that you’ll be able to use desktop grade photo/video editing software and upload your content directly.
Currently, you have to transfer edited content to your phone, or use a mobile editor like Snapseed on your smartphone to tweak your photos/videos. Or, you have to rely on cumbersome workarounds to upload content onto Instagram from a computer (a quick Google search reveals a couple of methods).
For now, Instagram appears to be testing the feature out internally, which means that not even beta testers have access yet. This also means that, sadly, any potential rollout is probably some ways off for now. Usually, internal tests are followed by beta testing, followed by beta testing 2 (then 3, or whenever the feature is ready for official launch), and… you get the gist of it.
Regardless, I can’t wait. It’d be a nice bit of functionality, to be honest, and as someone that does Instagram posting as part of my daily work, it’d be hugely convenient. However, Instagram/Facebook has made no reference to this, so be aware that the whole thing might just disappear. Even if the leaked information was authentic, plenty of features still don’t make it to official apps for a variety of reasons.
One can only hope, I suppose. Now, if only Instagram would release a proper app for iPadOS.
