Apple releases new Big Sur update that fixes an issue with USB-C hubs and docks

Apple has released the Big Sur 11.2.2 update for macOS. The update prevents certain models of the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air from “incurring damage when they are connected to third-party USB-C hubs and docks”.

As a 2017 MacBook Pro user, I’ve never faced any problems when connecting to any third-party USB-C docks and hubs. However, a few Twitter users like Matt Coulter have reported of their MacBooks being “buggy” when trying to connect with both a second monitor and a webcam to the laptop.

Today is one of those days where my macbook has decided I can either have my second monitor or my webcam but not both.

No reason other than because usb-c ports are so so buggy. Glad we got rid of those pesky reliable dedicated video ports

According to MacWorld, some users have reported that their Macs “have gone blank and become totally unresponsive after connecting them to a USB-C dock or hub”. The issue is apparently with some third-party powered USB-C hubs that are not fully compliant with the USB-C power specs.

You can now update your Mac to Big Sur 11.2.2 by pressing the Apple logo on the top left corner, then by pressing System Preferences. You can read more on each new Mac update here.

Additionally, there’s a possibility that there will be an improvement to the optimised battery charging feature for macOS 11.3. With that update, your Mac will be able to make sure that it is fully charged to 100% at least 3 hours before the start of a scheduled calendar event. However, it’s still a beta feature that someone found by digging through code, and we don’t know when it will debut—if it is going to.
