Apple likes to highlight how the iPhone and iPad are great gaming devices, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that games are a big part of the App Store ecosystem. According to new research from AppFigures, the hit multiplayer game Among Us has topped the mobile game download charts on both the App Store and Google Play.
Just to recap, Among Us is an online multiplayer social deduction game. In it, a group of four to 10 players are in charge in preparing their spaceship for departure and need to complete some basic tasks. However, among the crew are randomly assigned alien imposters. It is up to the players to discern who are the imposters before they are all eliminated.
It is interesting to note that the game was initially launched in 2018 by developer InnerSloth, but it only gained mainstream success in 2020. It is possible that the games’ popularity is attributed to more people spending time online multiplayer games at home.
The game is available on multiple platforms including Windows, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The mobile version has proven to be very popular as it is free to download. The game costs RM12.50 on Steam and USD5 (RM20) on the Nintendo Switch.
Even Apple has recognised the popularity of the multiplayer game, nominating Among Us as one of the most popular apps of 2020. As of last month, the mobile game registered more than 48 million downloads, though the vast majority were from Google Play.
AppFigures stated:
Among Us! ended a fantastic year by adding an estimated 48M new downloads in December. That’s its lowest month since taking off in August, but then again, it’s 48,000,000 new downloads. Most of which came through Google Play, which outpaces the App Store four to one.
Looking at the game’s performance in terms of App Store ranking, took the top spot by edging out Project Makeover, the second most downloaded game in December, followed by Sushi Roll 3D. It is worth mentioning that other classic games like Subway Surfers and Roblox also made the top 10 ranking, in the list below.
The survey also revealed that games in the ranking combined were downloaded a total of 240 million times globally. About 18% of these downloads, which is about 42 million, were from the iOS App Store while the remainder were made on Google Play on Android.
Data from SuperData found that Among Us is the most popular digital game of all time in terms of monthly players. The game recorded about 500 million active players in November alone.
