Nokia 6300 & Nokia 8000: HMD reportedly plans to release two throwback devices soon

Over the last couple of years or so, Nokia has released a couple of feature phones that bring up memories of the good ol’ days. These are usually based on iconic Nokia phones from the past, such as the Nokia 8110, the 5310, and of course, the legendary Nokia 3310. Now, HMD Global is reportedly planning to release two “new” devices soon: the Nokia 6300 and Nokia 8000.

According to Roland Quandt (via Winfuture), the pair of new devices will offer some level of “premium”, although it remains to be seen what aspects of the device he’s referring to. Apparently, the two devices will come with “smart” features, although this will obviously be limited by the hardware that feature phones generally come with.

In fact, we don’t even have any images to help visualise what the new Nokia feature phones will look like. However, based on their names, the Nokia 6300 will be based on the original 6300—first launched in 2007—a solid mid-range phone at the time, with a minimalist stainless steel body.

As for the Nokia 8000, it isn’t clear if it will be based on a specific model; instead, the phone will probably take its design inspiration from the slide-out covers of the Nokia 8000 series of the past. Back in the 90s, the 8xxx series came up with phones that were the company’s premium phones, with unique slide-out keypads, and premium stainless steel cases.

Quandt confirms that both devices will feature 4G LTE (don’t take that for granted, if the Nokia 5310 is anything to go by), and that we should see an official announcement within the next couple of weeks. Based on what we know thus far (which isn’t much), the Nokia 6300 and 8000 could run on KaiOS—which means that you should be getting support for WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube That said, the experience will obviously be different from Android and iOS versions.

So, what do you think? Personally, I can’t imagine using a feature phone in 2020, although I appreciate that there is still a market segment for simple, easy-to-use phones with long-lasting batteries. Still, I’d much rather get a base model Android smartphone. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
