Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 Malaysia: Everything you need to know

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, one of the most hotly-anticipated smartphones of 2020, has finally been announced for the Malaysian market. Despite durability issues faced by the first Galaxy Fold, its predecessor is still one of the most interesting—-and expensive—-mobile devices you can get in 2020.

Samsung unveiled its latest foldable flagship smartphone recently, although we’ve had to wait for Malaysian availability and pricing details. But the wait is over: here’s everything you need to know about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in Malaysia.

Price and availability

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be available in Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze on the 25th of September 2020, with retail pricing set at RM7,999. Meanwhile, pre-orders open from the 11th of September 2020 till the 24th of September 2020, with pre-order customers to get a free pair of Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Live (worth RM699) and a Montblanc Card Holder (worth RM655).

There will only be a single variant available with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage:

If you’re keen, you can pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 2 at the Samsung E-Store or selected Samsung Experience Stores.

Specs

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 looks very similar to the Galaxy Fold, although there are a few notable upgrades. For one, there’s a 6.2” HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 2260×816 pixel resolution—-which is a huge improvement over the 4.6” HD+ display on the old Galaxy Fold.

As for the main display, you’re looking at a 7.6” Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 2208×1768 pixel resolution. Samsung has also included a 120Hz refresh rate on the Z Fold 2, just like they did with the recently-launched Galaxy Note 20 series.

Unlike Samsung’s smartphones, there won’t be an Exynos-Snapdragon split for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 based on region. Instead, you get a Snapdragon 865+ processor with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, along with 256GB of fast UFS3.1 storage. And of course, 5G connectivity is supported, with NSA and SA bands both supported.

For photography, you get a triple rear-camera setup: a 12MP f/1.8 main camera, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide shooter, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto lens that offers up to 2x optical zoom. There are also identical selfie cameras that sit in a hole-punch cutout on both cover and main displays: a 10MP shooter.

Finally, the Z Fold 2 features a 4,500mAh battery under the hood. 25W wired charging is supported, along with wireless charging support. As expected, you’re missing out on a headphone jack—-although you’ll have stereo speakers to make up for it. Oh, and there isn’t an under-screen fingerprint scanner; instead, the scanner is side-mounted on the Z Fold 2.

So, what about durability issues? Samsung is equipping the Galaxy Z Fold 2 with its Ultra-Thin Glass—presumably the same as the smaller Galaxy Z Flip, while the Hideaway Hinge and CAM mechanism helps to offer “free-standing” capabilities.

This basically means that you’ll be able to position the Z Fold 2 at a variety of different angles to take advantage of the Flex mode—which works with the Camera, YouTube, and other selected apps. Samsung also says that the new Hideaway Hinge features new sweeper technology to prevent dust and particles from getting in—and damaging the foldable phone.
