The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is viewing seriously the recent harassment allegations made by former Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) CEO Abdul Jalil Rasheed. It was alleged that he had received harassment calls from unknown numbers, while his corporate email and LinkedIn accounts were hacked.
The commission has advised him to make a report to the authorities including the Royal Malaysian Police and the MCMC for further investigation.
Jalil Rasheed is PNB’s youngest president and group chief executive at 38-years-old. He has recently tendered his resignation and it was reported that his decision was due to harassment.
According to the Focus Malaysia, Jalil had said in his farewell email, “The last straw for me was the harassment I had to endure from hate calls from unknown numbers, hacking of my other corporate email account and my LinkedIn profile. This made me increasingly worry for the wellbeing of my family. In the end, I decided that it would be unfair to my family should matters escalate. We made a big financial and family sacrifice to relocate back to KL from Singapore because I truly wanted to contribute to nation-building. I’m disappointed this has to come to an abrupt end.”
“Oftentimes, making the right decisions is riddled with difficulties and some will be unpopular. The easy route would be to continue enjoying the perks of the office, whilst battling with your own good conscience. I have always believed that no individual is larger than an institution. I have no intention to drag PNB into this. PNB must be safeguarded at all costs. Hence I have chosen the difficult path, one that is lonely and devastating for my family and I,” he added.
Former media advisor to Tun Dr Mahathir, Datuk Kadir Jasin, had claimed that Jalil was forced out by unnamed critics who were putting a spotlight on alleged discrepancies in his academic qualifications. He added that Abdul Jalil is another victim of the Perikatan Nasional government that he said did not favourably view clean and independent professionals.
According to Kadir in his Facebook post, Abdul Jalil had done lots of cleaning up and refused to kowtow to some hotshot tycoons and the RM300 billion investment agency is no longer a gravy train for them. He added that some are calling for Abdul Jalil to be removed due to misrepresentation about his education.
He said that Abdul Jalil had received his degree from the University of London (UoL) but he reported it as the LSE. The explained that the London School of Economics and Politics (LSE) is one of the 17 colleges under the University of London. He said anybody that’s educated in the UK would know that nobody uses the University of London which is a unifying institution, and if you studied at LSE, you’ll use LSE.
