Are we about to see a bigger, more affordable Galaxy Fold 2?

I think that the jury is still out over the concept of foldable phones—at the moment, users still have well-founded doubts over the durability of the form-factor, along with pricing concerns. Those doubts were certainly not helped by the notorious issues faced by the first Galaxy Fold, although Samsung claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip has improved durability with an ultra-thin glass layer.

Now, a new report from Sammobile reveals that the “Galaxy Fold 2” could be available with a storage option of 256GB at a lower price; while the report uses Galaxy Fold 2, the name of Samsung’s next foldable device has not been confirmed at the time of writing. Previously, the original Galaxy Fold was released with a single storage option of 512GB for US$1,980 (~RM8,580).

There will still be a 512GB storage option, but the new variant should mean that the entry barrier to Samsung’s flagship foldable series will be significantly lowered. This apparent bid to bring the device towards more of the mainstream market is one that makes sense—after all, the Galaxy Z Flip (at US$1,400, about RM6,069) has reportedly been a success for Samsung.

Besides the new storage variant, the report also claims that we’ll be seeing a new 7.7″ full display compared to the 7.3″ display on the original Fold, along with a larger cover display. This increase in size, particularly for the cover display, is certainly welcome. Part of the issue that certain users have complained for the Galaxy Fold has been a cover display that is simply too small.

We’re also likely to see a hole-punch cutout on the Galaxy Fold 2, with most of Samsung’s flaghips (including the Z Flip) already ditching the notch for similar front-facing camera setups; 5G support is also expected.

As for the form-factor of the upcoming foldable, other reports have suggested something “new”. Bloomberg earlier said that the next foldable from will feature a design that’s more similar to the Huawei Mate X—with the main display folded outwards. That said, Sammobile‘s report mentions nothing of the sort. Additionally, there have also been rumours that an under-display camera could be featured on the Fold 2—although again, these are still rumours.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see what Samsung’s next Foldable phone will be like. No official details on a potential launch have been revealed just yet, but reports suggest that the Galaxy Fold 2 is expected to be launched sometime in Q3 2020.
