Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the exemption the RM1 cash withdrawal charge at all bank ATMs, to avoid crowding at the over-the-counter teller service.
However, this change only applies until the Movement Control Order (MCO) ends and takes effect on Monday.
Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri also stated:
We were made to understand that many people are still using the cashier service at the bank, because of the issue of the ATMs charging RM1 every time for cash withdrawal
Earlier today, it was reported that Maybank is temporarily waiving the interbank ATM cash withdrawal fee until the end of MCO before all banks did the same.
Typically, RM1 MEPS fee is applicable when a card holder withdraws money from an ATM of a different bank. (e.g. Using a Maybank card at CIMB ATM, or a RHB ATM card at Public Bank ATM)
The move is to help provide relief to customers who need to make cash withdrawals at their nearest ATM/self-service terminal during the extended MCO to help curb the spread of the COVID-19.
While this fee is being exempted for the time being, we are encouraged to practise social distancing. It is recommended to go cashless, and use contactless cards or eWallets when making purchases.
