The Proton X70 is quickly becoming Malaysia’s most popular SUV. As of February this year, Proton received over 20,000 orders for the model.

In the same month, Proton announced that 2,823 units of the X70 were registered. This includes the record-setting 1,000 units delivered to customers nationwide on the same day just before the Chinese New Year festive season.

Since its launch in December 12 last year, over 6,920 X70 have been registered.

In an announcement released today, Proton said that the number far exceeded the company’s initial expectations. The X70 has made Proton a leader in the SUV segment despite it being a new entrant into the category.

“The Proton X70 is building its fan base and attracting strong support from Malaysian SUV buyers. We are very thankful for the bookings we have received and are working very hard to get as many units registered and delivered to our customers as quickly as possible,” said Proton’s CEO, Dr Li Chunrong.

Despite the success, Proton is looking to achieve even higher sales numbers with the X70 leading the charge.

“Our next target will be to set new six-month and full-year registration numbers and we are confident of achieving them,” Dr Li added.

February is a record-breaking month for Proton overall. The company said it sold 5,283 cars including the X70. The number represented close to 13% of the market.

Proton added that for January and February this year, sales increased 42% for the same period last year.
