Your Discord chats could end up on Google: Turn this off now

Starting 16 November 2026, Discord will automatically create public web pages for eligible Discoverable Servers, featuring AI-generated conversation summaries. From mid-December, individual messages from participating public channels may also become searchable on Google and other search engines.

To manage visibility, Discord added an account setting, “Show me message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.” However, its default deployment leaves millions of active users exposed.

Who is affected?

Only users in a few regions with strict privacy laws, like the EU, the UK, South Korea, Canada, Brazil and Australia, as well as verified teen accounts worldwide, have this setting turned OFF by default. In Malaysia, the United States and most of the world, Discord turns this feature ON by default for adult accounts.

Discord will not crawl your past chat archive, messages sent before the mid-December 2026 rollout will never appear in search results.

However, once the feature launches, leaving the toggle on means any eligible message you post inside Discoverable channels can be crawled. Switching the setting off later only protects posts you send going forward, it will not wipe messages that were already indexed while the feature was active. To pull those off the web, you would have to manually track down and delete each individual message inside Discord.

How to turn off this setting

You can disable search indexing directly on mobile, desktop or through a web browser.

Open Discord, head to Settings, select Data & Privacy and switch off “Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.” If the toggle has not appeared in your mobile app yet, log in through the desktop app or the mobile web browser to change it. Once switched off, the protection covers your entire account across all devices.

If you manage a Discoverable Server, you can also control what appears publicly by opening Server Settings > Community > Web Presence. Discord provides separate controls for AI-generated Channel Summaries and individual Channel Messages, allowing administrators to disable either feature entirely or exclude specific channels.

Why this matters

Discord strips usernames and avatars from web pages and search snippets, but it indexes your exact words verbatim. If you mention real names, email addresses, personal anecdotes or sensitive project details in an eligible Discoverable channel, anyone searching through Google can find the conversation.

Spending 30 seconds to disable this setting can prevent your future messages from appearing on Discord’s public web pages and search engine results. However, server administrators must separately disable AI-generated Channel Summaries to prevent discussions from being summarised publicly.
