Gentari and BYD Malaysia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the deployment of BYD’s Flash Charging technology in Malaysia. The collaboration aims to expand ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure beyond showrooms, including along major intercity routes connecting key population centres.

BYD’s Flash Charging technology is capable of delivering up to 1.5MW which would provide approximately 400km of driving range in just five minutes for compatible EVs under optimal conditions.

The MoU was signed in Shenzhen, China, on 21 October 2026, between Gentari Group CEO Sushil Purohit and BYD Malaysia Managing Director Jacob Ma. The ceremony was witnessed by BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu and BYD Vice President Liu Xueliang.

Gentari and BYD to explore Flash Charging along major highways

Under the agreement, Gentari and BYD Malaysia will jointly identify suitable locations for BYD Flash Charging stations, especially along key intercity corridors.

Both companies will also assess power infrastructure requirements, battery energy storage systems (BESS), technical and commercial feasibility and potential operating models to support future deployment.

The collaboration combines Gentari’s experience in developing and operating EV charging networks with BYD’s battery and high-power charging technology.

Gentari Group CEO Sushil Purohit said, “Malaysia’s EV market is growing, but the next phase of adoption will depend on the quality, convenience and reliability of the charging experience.”

He added, “Speed is one part of that equation. Drivers also need chargers in the right places, backed by reliable power and dependable operations. BYD’s leadership in EV, battery and high-power charging technology, combined with Gentari’s experience in developing and operating EV charging networks, gives us a strong foundation to strengthen Malaysia’s EV charging ecosystem and support wider adoption.”

Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia. Through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub, it also provides access to approximately 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India.

BYD Vice President and General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division Liu Xueliang said, “Malaysia is an important market for BYD, and we are pleased to bring BYD Flash Charging here as part of our continued efforts to support the country’s growing EV adoption. Through our collaboration with Gentari, we look forward to exploring how this technology can contribute to a faster, more convenient and more connected charging experience for Malaysian EV users.”

Meanwhile, BYD Malaysia Managing Director Jacob Ma said, “We are very excited to see this collaboration come together. As an EV leader, we believe our responsibility goes beyond delivering great vehicles. We want to give our customers the confidence to make the switch to electric and enjoy a truly seamless EV ownership experience. This is an important step for BYD in Malaysia, and we are proud to be part of the journey to build a stronger and more complete EV ecosystem for Malaysians.”

Besides EV charging infrastructure, Gentari and BYD will also explore collaboration in renewable energy generation and energy storage.

BYD Flash Charging stations already spotted in Malaysia

As reported previously, BYD Malaysia had confirmed plans to introduce its Flash Charging technology in Malaysia, starting with Denza showrooms before expanding to other locations.

The Flash Charging stations can deliver up to 1,500kW (1.5MW) of DC charging output. When paired with compatible EVs equipped with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery technology, it can charge the battery from 10% to 70% in five minutes, or from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes.

The chargers are also supported by BESS to manage the massive power demands without requiring the same level of power directly from the grid.

Earlier this week, we spotted what appears to be BYD Flash Charging BESS equipment at Denza Glenmarie in Shah Alam. This was followed by another sighting at Denza Balakong, where the distinctive T-shaped overhead Flash charging structure and battery storage cabinets have already been installed.

While the Flash Charging technology supports a maximum DC output of 1,500kW, compatible vehicles are required to achieve the highest charging speeds. The Denza Z9 GT is currently the only model available in Malaysia that supports BYD’s full Flash Charging capability.

As shared by BYD Malaysia earlier, the Flash Charger will also be open to other BYD models and non-BYD EVs, up to their respective supported DC charging rates.

BYD Malaysia has yet to reveal the official opening dates for the Flash Charging stations in Malaysia.
