Malaysia is finally rolling out its next-generation MyKad, featuring a new physical design, upgraded chip technology and a total of 53 security features aimed at making the national identity card harder to counterfeit.
The new MyKad will be issued in stages starting 17 September 2026, with 40 selected National Registration Department (JPN) and UTC locations equipped to print the new card on the same day.
Among the key upgrades are a dynamic security hologram, polycarbonate construction, UV security elements, microtext, transparent window, Guilloche patterns, QR code and a new dual-interface chip that supports both contact and contactless NFC communication.
New MyKad comes with 53 security features
According to the National Registration Department (JPN), the latest MyKad uses a polycarbonate construction designed to offer better durability against heat, chemicals and physical wear.
The new MyKad also features Guilloche patterns, which are made up of very fine and complex security lines designed to make reproduction and counterfeiting more difficult.
There are also UV security features on both sides of the MyKad. Hidden patterns become visible when the card is exposed to ultraviolet light.
Another visible security feature is a dynamic security hologram. The hologram produces a three-dimensional visual effect that changes depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.
Also new is a transparent window has also been incorporated into the card as another physical authentication feature. On the rear, the new MyKad features a QR code intended to support verification and enforcement.
The upgraded chip uses a dual-interface design, which means the MyKad can be read using both conventional contact-based readers and contactless NFC readers.
New MyKad available from 17 September
JPN says the rollout of the new generation MyKad will begin in stages from 17 September 2026 across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
Initially, 40 selected JPN and UTC locations nationwide with card-printing facilities will be able to produce the new MyKad on the same day.
For JPN branches that are not equipped with printing facilities, the new MyKad will take around five working days to be produced.
Does the new MyKad still support Touch ‘n Go?
No. JPN has confirmed that the new-generation MyKad will not include Touch ‘n Go functionality.
This means the new MyKad can no longer be used as a Touch ‘n Go card for supported payments including public transport.
Users who want to continue using Touch ‘n Go will need to use the Touch ‘n Go eWallet or a separate Touch ‘n Go card.
If you’re still using your existing MyKad for Touch ‘n Go payment, take note that the feature is only valid for 10-years. You can check your MyKad’s TNG balance and validity by linking the card to your TNG eWallet app.
If you’re changing MyKad or if you have balance in your expired card, you can request for refund from the TNG Portal.
Do you need to replace your existing MyKad?
No. If your existing MyKad is still in good condition, there is no immediate requirement to replace it with the new generation card.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has advised Malaysians not to rush to JPN offices when the new MyKad starts rolling out on 17 September.
Existing MyKad cards remain valid and can continue to be used as usual.
According to the minister, there are approximately 24 million MyKad cards currently in circulation, while JPN typically issues between 180,000 and 200,000 cards each month.
He also said keeping the existing MyKad would not affect subsidy balances or eligibility associated with the cardholder’s identity.
In other words, there is no need to replace a perfectly usable MyKad simply to get the latest design. The new version will gradually enter circulation as Malaysians apply for their first MyKad or replace their existing cards when necessary.
