Grab tests Women-Only Rides feature: Here is how it works and how to get verified

Grab has quietly rolled out a new Women-Only Rides (Beta) feature in Malaysia, matching female passengers exclusively with female driver-partners.

For many women, this is a significant feature that directly addresses personal safety concerns and offers greater comfort and peace of mind when travelling alone or late at night.

However, the service cannot be used for instant, on-demand e-hailing and requires users to complete a mandatory identity verification process before the option becomes accessible in the app.

Advance Booking only and location availability

To use the service, passengers must secure their trip using Grab’s Advance Booking feature, as real-time bookings are not supported.

Scheduling your trip in advance gives the system sufficient lead time to assign an available female driver-partner to your route. Passengers can book with a minimum lead time of 75 minutes, or plan ahead up to 90 days in advance.

The service is currently restricted to city rides only, which means it cannot be booked for airport transfers to KLIA or intercity journeys.

At the moment, Grab’s official website states that the feature is restricted to the Klang Valley. However, the Grab mobile app indicates that it is also available in Johor and Penang.

Strict rules on male companions and children

Women-Only Rides cater to solo female travellers as well as all-female groups.

To maintain the integrity and safety of the service, driver-partners are instructed to cancel the trip if an adult male companion is present at pickup.

The only exception applies to female passengers travelling with male children aged 12 and below, who are permitted on board.

How identity verification works

To restrict access strictly to female users, Grab requires a one-time identity verification process.

Passengers must upload a MyKad or passport alongside a selfie, which Grab cross-references against official records. Only individuals identified as female in official documents will be granted access.

To complete the verification process within the app:

Step 1: Tap on the Women-Only Rides section in the app.

Step 2: Tap “here” under the “Declare your gender in Grab profile here” section.

Step 3: Tap “Gender” and select your gender.

Step 4: Tap “Save”.

For identity verification, tap “here” under the “Verify your identity on the app here” section and complete the verification prompt.

Verification can take up to three working days. Once approved, the Women-Only Rides option will appear under the ‘Standard’ category when setting up an Advance Booking.

We have already submitted our details for profile verification and will update this article with our hands-on experience as soon as access is granted.
