Puspakom has introduced Malaysia’s first AI-assisted undercarriage inspection technology, which helps to cut down time required to inspect the undercarriage of a commercial vehicle by nearly 90%.

Instead of taking around 10 minutes, the AI-assisted inspection can now be completed in about one minute.

The technology was showcased at the launch of Jelajah Malaysia Digital 2026.

Developed in collaboration with Malaysian technology company Keymag Sdn Bhd, the system uses intelligent image analysis to automate vehicle component and defect detection.

Importantly, the AI doesn’t decide whether a vehicle passes or fails its inspection. Instead, it serves as a decision-support tool, while the final pass or fail decision remains solely with Puspakom’s human Vehicle Examiners.

How Puspakom’s AI undercarriage inspection works

Puspakom’s AI-assisted system analyses images of a vehicle’s undercarriage to identify potential defects for further verification by a Vehicle Examiner.

According to Puspakom, the system is capable of detecting defects such as corrosion, oil leaks, brake system faults, axle defects and structural damage with greater consistency.

One of the biggest improvements is inspection speed. Puspakom says an AI-assisted undercarriage inspection takes about one minute, compared to around 10 minutes previously, reducing the time required by nearly 90%.

Besides reducing the amount of time commercial vehicles spend undergoing inspections, the faster process allows Puspakom to inspect more vehicles each hour, which could increase service capacity and reduce waiting times.

Puspakom CEO Mahmood Razak Bahman said, “AI is enabling us to redefine how vehicle inspections are conducted. By integrating AI into our inspection processes, we are improving operational efficiency, enhancing inspection consistency and delivering a better customer experience without compromising the integrity of statutory vehicle inspections.”

He added, “At Puspakom, we are leveraging AI not simply to introduce new technology, but to create meaningful benefits for our customers, road users and the wider community. By reducing inspection time and improving operational efficiency, AI delivers tangible value to commercial vehicle drivers whose livelihoods depend on productivity.”

The AI-assisted undercarriage inspection system is currently deployed on Puspakom’s Mobile Truck Service (MTS) for heavy commercial vehicles.

Puspakom to roll out more AI-powered vehicle inspection features

The undercarriage system isn’t the only area where Puspakom plans to use AI.

Puspakom is also developing ASTRA, an above-carriage inspection solution in collaboration with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM).

Together with future AI-powered tyre inspection capabilities, these Puspakom initiatives form part of its longer-term roadmap towards intelligent vehicle inspections. The new technologies are expected to be deployed in stages over the next 24 months.
