Ask Maps is rolling out in Malaysia: A new Google Maps experience powered by Gemini

You most probably use Google Maps by typing your destination or a landmark into the search bar. However, the new Ask Maps feature may completely change how you use Google Maps from now on.

Originally launched in March, Google announced that it has begun expanding the availability of Ask Maps to over 150 countries and territories worldwide, including Malaysia.

That being said, deployment appears to be taking place in stages, as none of the devices in our HQ has received the feature yet. This includes the latest Android releases, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

What is Ask Maps? How do you use it?

Ask Maps is essentially a Gemini-powered conversational feature embedded natively within Google Maps. Instead of just typing a keyword, location, or landmark into the search box as before, you can find answers by “asking” Ask Maps in a natural, conversational manner.

For example, let’s say you are looking for a spot to hang out with a couple of friends after work. You can try asking Ask Maps to suggest a nearby venue for a specific time, taking into account your desired vibe and group size.

The results would likely look something like this:

To utilise this feature (once it is available to you), simply tap the Ask Maps button located underneath the Google Maps search bar. If you are using Google Maps on a web browser, click the hamburger menu and select Ask Maps.

New Ask Maps features

Meanwhile, Google has implemented a number of new enhancement to Ask Maps since its initial release. Now, you can link Gmail (and also Google Calendar in the near future) which allows the feature to factor in upcoming flights, hotel bookings or restaurant reservations without requiring manual prompts – although the Gmail link is turned off by default, due to privacy.

Ask Maps can also now remember your past conversations, provided that your history settings are turned on. This allows you to recall recommendations from previous queries so you don’t have to start planning your road trip or dinner from scratch.

You can use Ask Maps to find the latest information on hotels and local events, including real-time price comparisons and availability. You can also check how busy your route, shop, or restaurant is, and Google has introduced a new live transit widget for public transportation delays.

Last but not least, users can now suggest tips or make corrections to a location conversationally via Ask Maps. Of course, all suggested edits are subject to Google Maps’ standard review and approval process.
