Proton Saga Cross AMA02 spotted undergoing testing at Federal Highway

We spotted a camouflaged car at Federal Highway earlier today that might be the new Proton Saga Cross. Also known as the Proton AMA02, camouflaged test units have been seen at Elite Highway and Genting Highlands, but this particular unit seems to be slightly different.

For starters, this is our first sighting of an AMA02 camouflaged car with the B2289A trade plate number. This plate number has previously been used on one of the e.MAS 7 pre-production units during the Proton e.MAS 7 Tour in 2024.

In addition, there is a large label that says H103 on the back, sides, and hood. Other differences that can be seen on the camouflaged car include:

  • The sticker cutaway on the headlights features two circular areas instead of just one
  • Possible air curtain on the front bumper
  • 5-spoke wheel design
  • Larger rear spoiler

Set to become the next model under the Proton Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) after Proton Saga MC3, the development of AMA02 was revealed to the public during a presentation at Proton Tech Showcase last December. There have been rumours within the industry that the AMA02 might be made available with a choice of ICE and hybrid powertrains.

This is in line with the information provided by last year’s presentation, whereby the AMA platform has been designed to support both types of powertrains. Proton has also showcased a hybrid powertrain that was dubbed FutureMotion HEV during the recent KL International Mobility Show (KLIMS) 2026.

The unit shown at the event consisted of two main elements, including a naturally-aspirated 1.5L BHE15 4-cylinder engine with a single Variable Valve Timing (VVT) setup producing 82kW (110hp) and 136Nm of torque, which acts as the Dedicated Hybrid Engine (DHE).

The second element is a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), although Proton did not reveal its power output. That being said, it has been stated in the company’s Tech Showcase presentation that the DHT for the AMA platform aims to deliver up to 130kW (174hp) alongside 240Nm of torque.

While Proton has yet to reveal the launch date for AMA02, one of its major suppliers has previously claimed that the model is set to go into production this October. The same company also claimed that the AMA02 is going to be an A-segment compact crossover that will compete in the same space as Perodua Ativa and Honda WR-V.
