MG EVs to be locally assembled in Melaka starting Q1 2026

SAIC Motor has announced its plan to assemble MG vehicles in Malaysia. The Completely Knocked Down (CKD) local assembly operation will take place at EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB) facility in Pegoh, Melaka.

As for the first MG model that will be assembled in Melaka, it is still unclear at the moment. Officially, SAIC did not reveal the exact model, although the Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia, Emory QiFeng, said that the first model to be assembled in Malaysia will be an EV.

That being said, Hamidon Abdullah, the Executive Chairman of EPMB, has mentioned in his speech that MGS5 EV will be the initial model to be rolled out from the Melaka facility. Ultimately, a representative from SAIC informed us that the exact model has not yet been confirmed.

Meanwhile, SAIC’s local assembly operation in Malaysia will not be limited to just EVs, though. The company, which is making Malaysia its ASEAN hub, has confirmed that hybrids and ICE models will also be assembled at EPMB Melaka.

So far, SAIC Motor has released four MG-branded EVs in Malaysia, including the MG Cyberster, MGS5 EV, MG4, and MGZS EV. There are also other SAIC Motor EVs available in Malaysia, such as MIFA 9, T90, eDeliver 3, eDeliver 5, and eDeliver 7, although these models are positioned under the Maxus brand and are being distributed separately by Weststar.

Emory added that the local assembly of MG models at EPMB Melaka will start in Q1 2026. Pilot production will begin by the end of this year, according to Hamidon.
