Charge+ is planning to establish a state-wide EV charging network in Sabah. Working together with EV Edaran, the CPO’s CEO, Goh Chee Kiong, teases its plan during the recent launch of Charge+’s new EV charging hub at Amverton Heritage Resort in Ayer Keroh, Melaka.

According to the map, Charge+ is set to deploy EV chargers in several cities throughout the state. While Chee Keong said that more information will only be revealed in due course, the location listed by the map includes:

  • Kota Kinabalu
  • Sipitang
  • Beaufort
  • Keningau
  • Papar
  • Tuaran
  • Kota Belud
  • Kundasang
  • Sandakan
  • Lahad Datu
  • Semporna

Sabah’s EV charging infrastructure is almost non-existent

MEVnet Sabah - Dec 2024
As captured in MEVnet on 13 May 2025.

The new partnership between Charge+ and EV Edaran come at a right time as Sabah clearly need a champion to grow the EV charging infrastructure over there.

According to the data on the Malaysia EV Charging Network (MEVnet) dashboard, there are only 26 charging bays at 10 locations in the whole of Sabah as of 31 December 2024. This data is supported by the PlugShare listing which showed that these charging bays are main located in Kota Kinabalu area.

The MEVnet dashboard also pointed out that Sabah’s aim to have 350 charging bays at 188 locations by the end of 2025 as part of the national 10,000 charging points target. It is quite clear that the state is still far behind the target even though we are going to hit the half-year mark in just a few weeks’ time.

Charge+ expansion in East Malaysia will also include Sarawak

Even though Chee Keong only showed the map of Sabah in his presentation during the Ayer Keroh launch event, he said that Charge+ and EV Edaran’s collaboration will also cover Sarawak. The detailed plan for the new East Malaysia charging network will be announced sometime in the H2 2025.

The partnership with EV Edaran focuses on the deployment of EV chargers at properties owned by Sebangga Group in East Malaysia. In Peninsular Malaysia, it prioritises properties that belonged to Amverton Group.

Charge+ x EV Edaran charging hub, Amverton Heritage Resort, Ayer Keroh, Melaka is currently under testing.

That is why Amverton Heritage Resort in Ayer Keroh was chosen as the first site of this collaboration. This is in addition to Ayer Keroh being the midway point between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, while it has also been deemed as a key node in Charge+’s 5,000km EV Charging Highway that covers Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
