This post is brought to you by Gentari.
One of the major obstacles to overcome in Malaysia if electric vehicles (EVs) are to go mainstream is the availability of public charging stations nationwide. Yes, there is an argument to be made for home chargers.
But that isn’t a practical solution for those who spend extended periods on the road, such as families going on road trips with an EV to explore the hidden gems of Malaysia. In situations where access to a home charger is not possible, a public charger will be required to recharge your EV.
Gentari has deployed over 335 EV charging points with over 100 DC fast chargers nationwide
Gentari is committed to supporting the national agenda to achieve 10,000 EV charging points by 2025. Having the most extensive network of DC fast chargers in the country, the company has been working hard to achieve significant milestones in reshaping Malaysia’s sustainable transportation landscape. As of 2023, Gentari has deployed more than 100 DC fast charging stations with over 335 public and private charging stations, spread over 90 locations across the country.
To enable seamless EV charger access for all users, Gentari has also signed a roaming partnership with EV Connection and Yinson GreenTech. The agreement allows cross-tracking and cross-access charging networks from either Setel, JomCharge or ChargEV apps. The three networks account for 70% of EV charging points in Malaysia.
Besides deploying charging points at key commercial developments in the Klang Valley, Gentari is also addressing EV range anxiety by deploying DC fast chargers along the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and East Coast Expressway (LPT).
In addition, Gentari is also upgrading existing AC charging points at Petronas stations at PLUS R&Rs to DC fast chargers. Some of its latest deployments include Petronas Ulu Bernam Southbound, Petronas Solaris Seri Kembangan, Petronas NKVE Northbound , Petronas Sungai Perak Northbound, Petronas Sungai Buloh Layby and Petronas Juru Layby.
Gentari brought several firsts to Malaysia’s EV charging scene
Last year, Gentari also introduced Malaysia’s first solar and battery-assisted EV charging station which was deployed at Behrang Layby Northbound. This hybrid solution allows Gentari to overcome the challenges of deploying EV fast chargers in areas with insufficient grid capacity. The company has plans to deploy fast chargers in various parts of the country to ensure nationwide connectivity and range confidence for EV drivers.
In the previous year, Gentari was the first to introduce ultra-fast 350kW DC fast charging and it is also the first to do so in Southeast Asia. The charge point operator was also the first in Malaysia to introduce kWh-based pricing. Initially rolled out at X Park Sunway Serene, the new pricing structure makes EV charging fair and equitable for all EV drivers compared to time-based pricing.
Forging strategic partnerships to accelerate EV adoption and advancing presence in East Malaysia
Gentari isn’t alone in its mission to accelerate the transition from ICE to EVs in Malaysia as they have also supported and collaborated with various key players including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Sunway, Sime Darby, Sarawak Energy and TNB to expand the national charging network.
To develop Sarawak’s EV charging infrastructure, Gentari signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Sarawak Energy Berhad and SEDC Energy. In September 2023, both Gentari and SEB launched the first EV charging station in Kuching and it was also the fastest public DC charger in Borneo at the time. A month later, Gentari deployed its second DC charger at OneCity Megamall in Kuching.
Gentari is also present as well in the Northern Borneo state of Sabah. They have recently deployed AC charging points at Centre Point Sabah as well as a DC charger at Regas Premium Sabah.
Gentari is more than just an EV charge point operator
While most EV drivers associate Gentari as a charge point operator, it is essential to note that the company is a clean energy solutions provider offering a diverse range of solutions not just in green mobility but also in renewable energy and hydrogen.
With an ambition to capture over 10% market share of public charge points and Vehicle-as-a-Service (VaaS) in key APAC markets by 2030, Gentari has delivered more than 2500 vehicles through its VaaS offering, helping over 130 businesses decarbonise their operations with fully electric cars, bikes, and vans. Besides offering fixed chargers, Gentari also has a mobile EV charging solution called EV ChargeGo which offers on-demand DC fast chargers at trade shows, exhibitions, test drives or track days.
On the renewables front, Gentari powers industries with integrated solar solutions. Globally, it has achieved more than 2.4 GW of renewable energy capacity in operations and in under development to date. The company recently diversified its portfolio by entering into the offshore wind segment as part of its 2030 aspiration to install 30 to 40 GW of renewable energy.
The company also made substantial strides last year in growing its hydrogen business, aiming to be a scale hydrogen producer and go-to-industry partner in enabling decarbonisation by supplying up to 1.2 MTPA of clean hydrogen by 2030. To this end, Gentari has undertaken efforts to position Malaysia as a hydrogen export hub whereby its hydrogen ventures will support a comprehensive national roadmap that includes hydrogen as an energy transition lever for Malaysia.
