Asus ROG Phone 8 series leaks online, showing new display with hole punch selfie camera

Ahead of CES 2024, Asus has begun teasing their next flagship gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone 8. However, it seems that it won’t just be a hardcore mobile gaming device anymore, at least according to these leaked specs and images.

According to Windows Report, there will be two new smartphones from Asus, the ROG Phone 8 and the ROG Phone 8 Pro. Both of these devices will get a new 6.78-inch, FHD+ AMOLED display, with up to a 165Hz refresh rate along with an LTPO backplane for an adaptive refresh rate on at least the Pro model. The screen will also be able to push up to 2,500nits and will have a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 over it for scratch resistance. Unfortunately, hardcore mobile gamers will be disappointed to know that the notch-free, full screen display of past ROG Phones are gone, with a more conventional punch hole cut out present on the ROG Phone 8 series. On the back meanwhile is the ROG logo with RGB lighting.

As you can probably expect, the ROG Phone 8 series should come equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 system-on-chip, and if these leaks are true it will get mated to up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. It’ll also come with Android 14 out of the box, skinned with ROG UI over it. One notable upgrade here is that it now apparently has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, significantly better than the IP54 rating on its predecessor. However, the battery here is seemingly smaller too, with a claimed 5,500mAh battery keeping the lights on.

The biggest upgrades according to these leaks though will be in the camera department. It seems that Asus is giving at least the ROG Phone 8 Pro a new rear camera setup and camera island design, with an improved 50MP main camera using the Sony IMX890 sensor, up from the previous 50MP Sony IMX766 shooters on the ROG Phone 7 series. It will also be flanked by a 13MP ultrawide camera and a 32MP telephoto offering 3x optical zoom, while in that punch hole cut out in front you’ll find a 32MP selfie shooter. There will also apparently be a slew of accessories to go along with the ROG Phone 8 series, such as a new AeroActive Cooler and come shiny new cases.

At least some of those specs do seem to be true, based on what Asus is teasing on their social media. Just a couple of days ago, the Asus ROG Global account on X, formerly known as Twitter, shared a link to a website asking their fans to take part in their blind camera test while hinting at their ‘brand new camera system’. Furthermore, the same account later posted on X to show off the ROG Phone 8’s display and its 2,500nits peak brightness.

In any case, if you’re keen on the ROG Phone 8 and the ROG Phone 8 Pro for yourself, you’ll have to wait till CES 2024 next month to know for sure how Asus’ upcoming flagship smartphone will be. The launch event will kick off on 9 January, 7am local time, and you’ll be able to watch their CES showcase live on their website by clicking here.
