During the tabling of Budget 2024, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced an allocation of RM20 million to the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC). This is double the allocation NSRC received under Budget 2023.
According to Anwar, NSRC has handled over 49,000 calls and has successfully frozen up to RM60 million worth of transactions since it was established. The RM20 million allocation is aimed at expanding the functions of NSRC to tackle scam activities.
In addition, Bank Negara Malaysia with the cooperation of financial institutions will develop a National Fraud Portal which is expected to be completed in mid-2024. The portal is expected to speed up the detection, freezing and return of funds using automated fund tracking.
Established in October 2022, the NSRC handles the scam hotline at 997. Within the first few months of operations, the NSRC has helped scam victims recover about RM1.4 million.
If you’re a victim or suspected to be a victim of a scam, you are urged to call the NSRC hotline at 997 within 24 hours so that Bank Negara Malaysia can take swift action to block the outflow of funds.
When making a report to 997, you are urged to prepare a brief description of the incident, your personal details, scammer details and the transaction details. Do note that the NSRC, the police or your bank will not ask for your personal banking information such as your username, password, PIN, TAC or OTP.
