Petronas green energy subsidiary Gentari has officially expanded its operation into Australia. This is following the acquisition of WIRSOL Energy from the German solar energy company WIRCON back in February.
Said to be one of the country’s leading renewable energy (RE) solutions providers, Gentari has since rebranded its newly acquired Australian subsidiary to Gentari Solar Australia. The name seems rather apt as the subsidiary is focusing on integrated solar and battery energy storage systems as well as RE asset management.
According to its website, Gentari Solar Australia currently operates and maintains 7 solar projects across New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria which have a total capacity of 721MW. It is also currently working on solar and energy projects in Maryvale and Barnawartha that have a combined capacity of more than 500MW.
In the long run, Gentari said that it is looking further increase Gentari Solar Australia’s RE capacity to more than 5GW. This is in order to support Gentari’s ultimate aim of having at least 30GW of RE capacity by 2030.
According to Gentari’s Chief Renewables Officer, Low Kian Min, the company is also keen to explore other clean energy technologies in Australia such as wind power. Not only that, Gentari is also looking for opportunities within the green mobility space in the country.
Gentari’s entry into Australia seemed right on time as the country has already begun to move away from coal as its main source of electricity generation. The Australian government is now looking to have 82% of its electricity to be generated by renewables by 2030.
Prior to the expansion into the Australian market, the Petronas subsidiary already amassed over 1GW through its existing RE projects in Malaysia and India. Aside from having more than 30GW of installed capacity by 2030, Gentari is also aiming to produce 0.7mtpa of clean hydrogen within the same time frame.
