Gentari, JomCharge, and ChargEV have now successfully integrated their electric vehicle chargers with each other following the formal agreement that they signed back in March. This essentially allows EV owners to utilise these chargers regardless of their preferred network without the need to download multiple apps.
Prior to this, EV owners have to utilise separate apps that correspond to each of these EV charging networks. There is a tiny exception for Gentari and JomCharge as some of their chargers can be accessed through both Setel as well as JomCharge’s own app even before this roaming agreement came into existence.
This is primarily because EV Connection who is the operator of the JomCharge network has helped Gentari deploy its chargers. Together, they operate somewhere close to 200 chargers nationwide although they are nowhere near Yinson GreenTech’s ChargEV which is currently the largest EV charger network in Malaysia with more than 400 to its name.
The roaming activation is still on-going
Through the roaming partnership, users will be able to access more than 550 chargers through all three apps or approximately 60% of the public chargers in Malaysia. That being said, only four locations have officially been activated today:
- Berjaya Times Square
- Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur
- Suria KLCC
- X Park Sunway Serene
If you have been following the progress of the local EV industry through SoyaCincau, then you are already aware that the Berjaya Time Square chargers are under the ChargEV network. Both of the location’s 225kW dynamic DC fast chargers and 22kW AC chargers are part of the roaming implementation while this also applies to the ChargEV’s 3.7kW AC chargers at the Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
For Suria KLCC and X Park Sunway Serene, both locations have previously been covered by both Setel and JomCharge apps. With today’s launch, users can also utilise all of these Gentari chargers through the ChargEV app.
As for the other 500+ chargers, expect them to go online in stages within the next few weeks. The reason why the three Charge Point Operators are implementing the roaming feature in stages is to make sure that the experience will be as trouble-free as possible, in addition to the sheer number of chargers involved in the effort.
In case you could not spot the cross-availability of the chargers between the three networks on Setel, JomCharge, and ChargEV, make sure that you have updated the respective app. In fact, we noticed that the update that activates the roaming feature for all three apps was made available in the App Store and Google Play just as the official announcement took place at Energy Asia.
Last but not least, yes, you can still earn Mesra reward points via Setel even if you charge your EV using a ChargEV charger. In fact, you are now able to obtain more Mesra points than usual by doing just that as the 3x Mesra points promo which is applicable for EV charging, is still going on as we speak.
