TM has signed a strategic partnership with Maxis which will improve Unifi Mobile’s coverage nationwide. Under the collaboration, TM will be able to access Maxis’ 4G Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) as well as 4G and 2G Domestic Roaming services to improve its mobile connectivity throughout Malaysia.
According to the joint statement, MOCN is a network-sharing mechanism which allows different core networks to share the same Radio Access Network (RAN). With this partnership, TM can extend its 4G coverage across the country by tapping on Maxis’ RAN infrastructure. This will help boost Unifi Mobile’s population coverage to more than 95%.
Under the agreement, Maxis will provide approximately 6,800 sites for 4G MOCN and domestic roaming, and 10,000 sites for 2G domestic roaming. This will benefit users in both rural and urban areas nationwide.
Commenting on the ceremony held at TM HQ in Cyberjaya, Maxis CEO Goh Seow Eng said, “This is a significant milestone for Maxis which represents our capabilities and track record in providing high-quality mobile networks. We look forward to progressing ahead with TM on this initiative. Industry collaboration is the right way forward as it will ultimately benefit consumers with wider coverage through better cost efficiency and more efficient use of our resources.”
Meanwhile, TM Group CEO Datuk Imri Mokhtar said, “We are witnessing an important step in the industry’s collaborative efforts towards infrastructure sharing. Our partnership will elevate TM’s 4G mobile proposition to deliver exceptional customer experience for home, SME, and enterprise customers. It will complement our 5G offering, and pave the way for greater innovation and collaboration, to deliver solutions and services for all Malaysians.”
Prior to this, Unifi Mobile (formerly Webe/P1) signed a domestic roaming agreement with Celcom in 2016. If an Unifi Mobile user is outside TM’s mobile coverage, users can still get connected via the Celcom network. In 2019, Celcom and Unifi Mobile signed a network agreement for 4G domestic roaming and MOCN services for a period of 3 years.
Unifi Mobile is also offering 5G services as TM has signed an access agreement with Digital Nasional Berhad in late 2022. Despite terminating the share subscription agreement with DNB recently, Unifi Mobile customers can still continue to access 5G without interruption.
