UiTM apologises after leaking nearly 12,000 IC numbers, emails on Google Sheets

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) is the latest Malaysian entity to cause a furore over a data leak, after it inadvertently revealed the IC numbers and email addresses of 11,891 applicants on Google Sheets. On its website, the institution inserted a plain unsecured link to the full list, ostensibly to allow prospective students to check their emails ahead of their application test.

The leak was flagged by Twitter user (and fellow applicant) @imraimy, who posted the screenshots you see here. For its part, UiTM has responded to the tweet, apologising and saying that the link is no longer active.

This is not the first time UiTM has found itself in hot soup over such a matter. In 2019, it was reportedly involved in a data breach that revealed the records of 1,164,540 students, covering all of its campuses nationwide. However, its then vice chancellor Hassan Said denied its data and information systems were hacked, theorising that screenshots of said hack may have been falsified.

Affected applicants can make a complaint to the Personal Data Protection Department of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) by filling out this form.
