Petronas’ eWallet Setel has added a new feature that allows users to sell their used cooking oil for cash. The pilot programme, a collaboration with cooking oil recycler BioLestari Energy, is currently available in Kajang, Semenyih, Bangi and Serdang, with plans to expand to more locations “soon”.
Customers can request to sell their cooking oil by going into the Setel app, tapping on the “recycle used cooking oil” icon and selecting “request collection”. You’ll then be taken to a form where you can input your name, phone number, house address, email address and the amount of oil you wish to sell (5kg minimum). You’ll first have to filter the oil to remove any residue and store it in a sealed container; first-timers will receive a free jerrycan to get started.
BioLestari’s licensed agents will then come to collect your cooking oil within four working days and pay you based on the amount. As an added bonus, Setel will give you an additional RM10 in credits until March 31.
Cooking oil, especially when used in large amounts for deep frying, can be problematic if not disposed properly. Poured down the sink, it can clog up your pipes, and it can also stink up drains and sewers due to bacterial growth. It also makes it more difficult for water treatment companies to filter water.
The used oil can instead be recycled to produce soap, lubricants, candles, animal and pet feed; it can also be used to make biodiesel—as currently sold in Malaysia as B7 and B10 Euro 5 diesel—and even renewable jet fuel.
