In case you haven’t heard, Samsung had launched the Galaxy A lineup last week. Consisting of the Galaxy A34 and the Galaxy A54 (with no Galaxy A74 in sight), Samsung’s midrange smartphone lineup should probably be quite interesting to those who want a solid and well-rounded smartphone at a cheaper price without needing any high-end features.
However, if you are considering between the Galaxy A34 and the Galaxy A54, you might be confused about the exact differences between the two midrangers. Here’s a quick breakdown of what makes the Galaxy A34 and Galaxy A54 different from one another.
Starting with the part of the smartphone that you’ll interact with the most, the display between the Galaxy A34 and the Galaxy A54 are actually pretty similar. Both use a Super AMOLED panel for the display with a Full HD+ resolution that can push out a 120Hz refresh rate, along with a peak brightness of 1,000nits.
However, while the Galaxy A34 may be positioned below the Galaxy A54 in the product stack, the former actually has the larger display between the two, with a 6.6-inch display compared to the Galaxy A54’s 6.4-inch screen. This does also mean though that the Galaxy A34 has a weaker 390ppi pixel density compared to the Galaxy A54’s 403ppi. Also, the Galaxy A34 has a much older looking teardrop notch up top compared to the Galaxy A54’s punch hole cut out.
Last year, Samsung kitted out the Galaxy A33 and Galaxy A53 with the same Exynos 1280 processor. This time though, the Galaxy A34 and the Galaxy A54 are set to use different hardware under the hood.
The Galaxy A34 will come with the 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 1080 processor, while the Galaxy A54 uses Samsung’s own 5nm Exynos 1380 chip instead. Both devices will come with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage as well as a microSD card slot for up to 1TB in expandable storage.
Also worth noting is that Samsung has guaranteed at least four major Android OS upgrades and five years of security patches for the Galaxy A lineup. They come with Android 13 skinned with OneUI 5.1 out of the box.
Here is where the Galaxy A54 probably has the biggest advantage over the Galaxy A34. Samsung has given the Galaxy A34 a 48MP, f/1.8 main rear camera with OIS on the back, flanked by an 8MP, f/2.2 ultrawide camera and a 5MP, f/2.4 macro sensor. Housed in that teardrop notch meanwhile is a 13MP, f/2.2 selfie camera.
In comparison, the Galaxy A54 offers much better hardware, with a main 50MP, f/1.8 camera with OIS next to a 12MP, f/2.2 ultrawide shooter along with a 5MP, f/2.4 macro lens. It also has a much better selfie camera with a 32MP, f/2.2 front facing camera.
Other than that though, the rest of the hardware on the Galaxy A34 and the Galaxy A54 are actually quite similar. For starters, both devices come with a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast charging, with Samsung claiming that they’ll be good for up to 21 hours of video playback.
The two Galaxy A devices also come with stereo speakers, and in-display fingerprint sensor, and an IP67 dust and water resistance rating. They come with support for Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and 5G too, with the Galaxy A54 having a slight edge with support for WiFi 6 while the Galaxy A34 is limited to just WiFi 5 connectivity.
Globally, both devices will come in four colourways, namely Awesome Lime, Awesome Graphite, Awesome Violet and Awesome Silver.
Unfortunately, Samsung Malaysia has not yet made the Galaxy A34 nor the Galaxy A54 available for purchase here at the moment though during the launch Samsung stated it’ll be here by the end of the month.
However, we do know how much it costs elsewhere, with the Galaxy A34 starting at GBP349 (~RM1,914.72) in the UK while the Galaxy A54 starts at GBP449 (~RM2,463.35) there. Similarly, in Indonesia, the Galaxy A34 starts at IDR4,999,000 (~RM1,458.37) while the Galaxy A54 is being sold at IDR6,399,000 (~RM1,866.80).
