WhatsApp now supports picture-in-picture video calls on iPhones

WhatsApp has pushed out update 23.3.77 to iPhones, adding several new features to the hugely popular messaging app. With this, the company has finally adopted iOS’ picture-in-picture (PiP) functionality already used by the likes of FaceTime and Netflix.

As the name suggests, this update allows users to keep their video calls in view while using other apps. When WhatsApp is minimised, the call appears as a floating window which can be moved. This feature was announced back in December, while it was being beta-tested. Apple added PiP functionality to the iPhone with iOS 14 in 2020.

Other new bits include the ability to add captions to documents being sent out, support for longer group titles and descriptions and personalised avatars for use as stickers and profile photos. It should be noted that these features may not all be available immediately, as WhatsApp says they will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

As yet, WhatsApp is limited to iPhones (and Android phones, of course); there’s still no dedicated iPad app, and users on the tablet will still need to utilise the web version for access. There’s also no word on when there will be a native desktop app for macOS—like the kind pushed out to Windows users back in August—but a public beta was made available last month.
