The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has revealed that Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is currently conducting a survey on the public perception of Electromagnetic fields (EMF) from 5G. The survey is conducted under the MCMC’s Digital Society Research Grant (DSRG).
The survey takes less than 10 minutes to fill up and it asks about your perception and understanding of EMF emissions from 5G radio communication infrastructure and consumer premise equipment (CPE). This may include health, safety or even perceived impact on your house value if a 5G tower is erected in your area.
The survey also gauges public perception about the use of special covers and accessories to minimise exposure. It also asks if you’re confident about the current public policies and guidelines to protect the public from EMF exposure. The survey also asks if you believe that vaccines contain 5G microchips and 5G EMF radiation can increase the spread of COVID-19.
The survey is open to the public and you can participate here.
In the past couple of years, the MCMC has assured that there’s no need to worry about 5G following speculations made on social media. Studies have shown that the exposure to Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Field (RF-EMF) is within the recommended limits under the guidelines of the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The World Health Organisation (WHO) concluded that current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low-level electromagnetic fields based on approximately 25,000 articles that have been published over the past 30 years.
Professor Dr. Tharek Abd Rahman, an MCMC Commission member and a Professor in wireless communications at UTM has said that the assumption that headaches, depression, anxiety and fatigue are caused by exposure to low-level EMF is inaccurate. He explained that there’s no scientific evidence to support such claims. He added that EMF is grouped under the category of non-ionising radiation, and the quantum waves are not enough to cause any changes to a molecular structure compared to ionising radiation. The only effect is heat and it isn’t enough to cause long-term damage to human tissues.
When it comes to aviation safety, the MCMC has confirmed that Malaysia’s 3.5GHz band for 5G will not interfere with the aircraft system. Unlike the US, Malaysia’s C-band is operating at a lower band of 3.4-3.6GHz which is further away from aircraft radio altimeter which works in the range of 4.2-4.4GHz.
Following the rise of misinformation about COVID-19 and 5G, there have been incidents of people burning down 5G towers and some even took advantage of the situation by selling “anti-5G protection” devices which cost over RM1,500.
