Kinokuniya Malaysia warns of fake Facebook pages scamming users with “free books”

Kinokuniya Malaysia has announced on their official Facebook page that there are currently several fake Facebook pages impersonating the bookstore. According to them, there have been SMSes, WhatsApp messages, Facebook ads and messages about the store falsely having celebrations or giving out “free books”.

“All those messages/advertisements/posts are by unknown sources which impersonate us, and we are not related to these accounts in any way… We will not contact customers using WhatsApp,” wrote Kinokuniya.

I’ve looked up “Kinokuniya Malaysia” on Facebook and found a result of a “newer” page pretending to be Kinokuniya Malaysia. The page has just several hundred page likes, and it doesn’t have any actual posts either.

The official Kinokuniya Malaysia page, however, has 59K likes, 61K followers, and many posts. It includes the post that warns users of the fake scammer pages on Facebook.

Kinokuniya also posted an example of what a conversation between a user and a scammer might look like. They claim that they’re “Economics Assistant Mayfair” and would ask you in you want a free book. They’ll also ask for your personal information.

Facebook has had so many scam-related problems, and we’ve reported quite a few of them before. A recent one was how Dr. Amalina Bakri, a Malaysian doctor with a large Twitter following, posted that a few Facebook pages were claiming to be her in order to scam users on the platform.

Make sure you remember to stay away from things like too-good-to-be-true offers, people you don’t know that ask you for money right away, and if they ask you for personal information like bank details, passwords, or access to your computer. And remember to also do your fact-checking and research from reputable sources. You can look up this article to learn how some scammers get you, as well.
