Elon Musk creates a poll to decide if he should step down as Twitter head. This is why

Another day, another Twitter/Elon Musk related news story. This time, he has now started a Twitter poll to ask users if he should step down as head of Twitter. He also said that he would be abiding by the results. But why?

What likely started it

I mean, there were tons of other antics Musk had done that caused a slow downfall for the social media platform. But today at around 1am, Twitter Support had updated its feed saying that the platform “will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter”. This includes not being able to post Facebook, Instagram, Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr, and Post links.

According to Twitter, the platform would be taking action against users that violate this policy “at both the Tweet level and the account level”. So, users will no longer be able to include links to their profiles on other social networks in their Twitter bio, or send out tweets directing users to check out their other accounts. Users aren’t even able to post usernames or handles from other platforms with URLs.

Twitter Support also posted its support page so users can get “more information”. However, the link goes to a page that no longer exists.

Despite all this, Twitter says they will still allow paid advertisement/promotion for any of the prohibited social media platforms. But a user reported that you can’t do that right now, either.

What’s happening now

Just a few hours after Twitter’s “policy change”, Elon Musk tweeted that “going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes”. He then apologised and said it “won’t happen again”.

Musk also posted a Twitter poll asking users if he should step down as Twitter head. Currently, the majority picked “Yes“.

The status of Twitter’s new policies, in the meantime, remains unclear. Musk, however, explains that the link policy “will be adjusted to suspending accounts only when that account’s primary purpose is promotion of competitors, which essentially falls under the no spam rule”.
