If you’re travelling on DUKE or SPE highway, take note that RFID and PayDirect payments are currently not available. This means highway users must maintain sufficient balance on their physical Touch ‘n Go card in order to pass through the Touch ‘n Go and SmartTAG lanes. The two eWallet-linked payment methods were down since 10am this morning.

According to DUKE Highway’s Facebook page, they are currently facing disruptions to their Touch ‘n Go and RFID systems on DUKE and SPE today. They explained that the issue was caused by vandalism on Telekom Malaysia’s fibre optic network located near DUKE highway. As a result, Touch ‘n Go PayDirect and RFID are affected for the time being.

The highway operator explained that TM is working on restoring DUKE’s connections as soon as possible, and apologised for any inconvenience caused by the disruption.

Highway toll plazas would require an active internet connection in order to accept RFID and PayDirect payments as the toll fees are deducted directly from your eWallet. From the current incident, it appears that the fibre optic connection is the single point of failure. A redundant connection such as 4G or 5G would be necessary if the country wants to adopt RFID as the main payment method for toll collection. Alternatively, the system could have an “offline mode” which can allow vehicles to pass and the toll fares are deducted later once the connection is restored.

PLUS also faced disruption for RFID on Thursday and the problem was solved within 2 hours.
