Earlier this week, Great Wall Motor (GWM) finally launched the Ora Good Cat—easily the most anticipated electric vehicle of 2022—in Malaysia. It grabbed the headlines with its seriously attractive pricing, immediately making it the cheapest EV in the country. The cutesy design, high level of standard specification and eyebrow-raising range claims have also garnered attention, and you can take a closer look at the car in the video below.
There are two variants of the Good Cat being offered in Malaysia—the 400 Pro and 500 Ultra, the numbers corresponding to the claimed range. Pricing is as follows:
These figures include a five-year/150,000km warranty, an eight-year/180,000km battery warranty and five times’ free service. Amazingly, the car also comes with a 7kW AC wallbox charger to be installed at home, on top of the usual 3.5kW three-pin slow charger.
Both models get a electric motor at the front that produces 141hp and 210Nm of torque, getting the Good Cat from zero to 100km/h in 9.3 seconds; top speed is electronically limited to 152km/h. The difference between the two is range—the 400 Pro has a 47.8kWh battery claimed to be capable of 400km of range, while the 500 Ultra’s larger 63.1kWh battery is said to enable the car to travel 500km on a single charge.
However, the range claims are a little optimistic, as GWM uses the outdated NEDC cycle instead of the stricter WLTP cycle used nowadays. In reality, the Pro’s range is somewhere around the 300km mark, whereas the Ultra is capable of about 400km at best.
Both models are capable of up to 6.6kW of AC charging through a dedicated wallbox charger, taking eight hours to fill the battery of the Pro and ten hours for the Ultra. They can also support up to 60kW of DC fast charging, enabling you to charge the Pro from 30 to 80% in 32 minutes and the Ultra in 40 minutes.
The Good Cat’s looks are as adorable as its name, with its rounded headlights and body and the optional contrasting roof; the car also features distinctive taillights hidden in the rear glass, as well as stylish 18-inch alloy wheels. The car comes in four colours, including Coral Blue, Hamilton White, Sun Black and Mars Red, the latter only available with a black roof. The Ultra can additionally be had in two exclusive colour schemes—Verdant Green with a white roof and Hazel Wood Beige with a brown roof.
Inside, the Good Cat is just as stylish, with a suede-covered dashboard, a Mercedes-like widescreen display panel, Mini-style chrome toggle switches and quilted door panels. All models come with leather upholstery in black, with the exception of the Ultra variant painted in the special colours, which come with matching two-tone interiors.
As standard, the Good Cat gets keyless entry, a buttonless quick start system, single-zone automatic climate control, a seven-inch instrument screen, a 10.25-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 360-degree camera system and even a panoramic glass sunroof. On top of that, the Ultra adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory and massage functions.
The Good Cat also comes with lots of safety features as standard, including six airbags, stability control, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go and lane centring assist. There’s also a Wisdom Dodge System (WDS) that will give more space when passing lorries and other large vehicles.
The extra kit on the Ultra is relatively minor and includes Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Lane Change Assist (LCA), blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and rear collision warning. The car also adds front parking sensors in addition to the standard rear sensors, along with an automated parking assist.
