Is the Redmi Note 11S 5G the best phone under RM600? | Ask Us Anything #36

Welcome back to another episode of Ask Us Anything, where we gather your questions from the internet and answer them.

In today’s episode, we find out if the Realme 9 Pro+ has a RAM expansion function, the best mobile plan to make international calls, and how much value are you getting with the Redmi Note 11S 5G for under RM600.

What does the Redmi Note 11S 5G pack for under RM600?

According to Najib, the Redmi Note 11S 5G featured on this list gets you the most value for your money. In order to get the phone for under RM600, you would need to get the variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. That said, the phone does come with expandable storage of up to 1TB, so you can always increase your storage capacity down the line.

For under RM600, you’re getting a phone powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 810 with 5G capabilities. Up front, there is a 6.6” FHD+ IPS LCD that supports up to 90Hz refresh rate. There’s also a 13MP front camera housed in a punch hole on the display. At the back, you’ll find a triple camera setup with the primary camera being a 50MP unit. Along with that, there is also an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 2MP macro camera.

Watching videos should also be pleasant thanks to the pair of stereo speakers located at the top and bottom frames. Rounding things up is a 5,000mAh battery with support for 33W fast charging with the included charger.

As a bonus, you also get an infrared or IR blaster to control dumb appliances and NFC to top-up your NFC-enabled Touch ‘n Go card. You can check out the Redmi Note 11S 5G on Shopee.

Does the Realme 9 Pro+ has a RAM expansion function?

Okay, before we find out if the Realme 9 Pro+ has this feature, I just want to briefly explain what it is. Essentially, the phone can assign some of its onboard storage to be used as RAM. But do note that if you enable this feature, you will have less storage space until you disable it.

On the Realme 9 Pro+, you will first need to ensure you are running the latest version of Realme UI. The RAM extension feature was unavailable on my device before updating to the latest software version. To do so, head on over to About Device in the settings menu. Click on the topmost box to check and update the software.

Once done, return to this page and you will find the RAM section near the bottom of the screen. Here, you can toggle the RAM expansion feature. You will be presented with three different amounts which are 2, 3 and 5GB. Choose your preferred option and restart the phone for the settings to take effect.

Depending on your chosen amount you can have a total of up to 13GB of RAM.

What is the best mobile plan to make international calls?

One example would be Hotlink’s Prepaid Unlimited or Pantas plans. By using the international direct dialling or IDD code, you can make a voice call to a fixed or mobile line in Canada for RM0.07 every 30 seconds.

However, if you’re planning on speaking for hours on end, then Alex recommends that you make the call over the internet by using apps like WhatsApp, Skype or FaceTime.
